15 August 2011 Ride: Tofu Run

Well, I've gone and filled up another blog.  One would think that after setting up two, creating a third one would be a piece of cake but it can be a rather time consuming process as I try to reestablish what I had in the previous two.  I still never fully populated the second one.  So, if I had some valuable insights, some incredible words of wisdom or thoughts to pass along that would bring peace to all human kind, I certainly have forgotten them now as I try to finish getting this post completed.

Looking around on the morning walk for something special to photograph, I thought Lupe's eyes were certainly worth a shot.

Playing around with the panoramic setting of the new camera.

Lumber jack duties were on the agenda today and I wanted to get them done in the early part of the day when it was still cooler; biking would have to wait till the warmer part of the day.  Today's task involved splitting the logs I cut up a couple of weeks back the new-fangled fashioned way with a gas powered log splitter.  After splitting one log, a thin sliver glistened in the sunlight and as I looked closer there seemed to be a very thin shaving of metal embedded in the log.

Log or cliff side of a deep canyon?

I looked at the log's companion that I just split to see if I could see a continuation of the metal strand.  This was really intriguing as the piece seemed to be fairly deep in the trunk.  Counting the trunk rings, it seemed to go back 25-30 years; we have lived on this property 21 years.  The likeliest answer was barbed wire from long ago but the tree was in an odd place for barbed wire to be running.  Also, the strip seemed shiny and new without any rust; barbed wire would certainly show rust or at least have a dull grey finish. I placed the log aside and planned to put a magnet to it later when I got back to the house

Chicken wings was on the menu for dinner but Rachel is a vegetarian (plus fish) so I placed a small ice pack in my small rear pack and planned to make a stop at Harp's part of the 26 plus mile bike ride.

I have visited this pond fairly often during the year and this is the first time I have seen any geese at all.  Note the great blue heron in flight on the right hand side.

A little fuzzy but I still like the appearance of this dragonfly; almost seemed as if it could be some sort of new experimental military helicopter.

I have a thing about fire hydrants.  I like the extra chains on this one.

So, back home after the special tofu run:  I pulled a magnet off the refrigerator and eagerly went out to the truck to get the log.  I'm looking around on the log for the metal; where is it?  There was something embedded in the right location and had a similar appearance but was definitely not metal.  This can't be, I muttered.  I got a nut picker and pecked at what now looked like dried wood, which, it turned out, was exactly what my metal filings turned out to be.  Alas...It did give me an idea for a good story line.

Today's tofu run:  2hrs 17mins.  27.18 miles  84-88 degrees.  Miles YTD:  5,397.03
