One might wonder, with the title of this blog, My Life as a Bike, why there was so much emphasis on the felling and then cutting of a tree into logs. At one time, I mentioned that I felt that the biking was the pervasive theme during this year and that all other events were stops along the biking journey. The felling and cutting is a major stop, upping the physical limits even further as I try to maintain a certain mileage each week.
Working a chainsaw and hauling logs for three and a half hours becomes rather taxing and the main thing I feel like doing after such a morning of activity is to kick back and take it easy. So, the determination and dedication to riding every day got a thorough testing.
A while back, I came up with a new Olympic sport where one engages in competitive bike riding and stops at certain intervals to take photographs with a zoom lens. A contestant gets ranked not only on his/her biking speed but on the quality of the photographs. A new sport I came up with these past couple of days is a sport where one engages in two or three hours of chainsawing and then hauling the logs from point A to point B. And, then, the second stage of the sport is bike racing for three hours. Even better, one hour of cutting and hauling and one hour of biking for six hours. Now, that’s a biathlon!
This has been written before I went for the daily ride today. I knew it would be another late posting and I knew I would be too tired to do much composing later in the evening. So, off into the heat I go.
I finally made it on the trail around 3:30, probably at the heat of the day. The legs were tired from all the squatting and lifting in the morning but it felt good to be on the bike. If it were not for the fact that I had to get home to prepare dinner, I know I would have ridden longer than I did.
I came across Sheri on the trail. Her daughter and our daughter know each other from way back in 2nd grade from school and from playing on the same softball team together. It was good to come across Sheri and chat for a few minutes.
Just one day later and the shoes have changed position.
Today's Ride: 1hr 28miins. 18.25 miles. 91 degrees. Miles YTD: 5,731.76
