1 September 2011 Ride: Happy 25th Anniversary

Today marks the first day of the last trimester of this year long journey.  Today is also our 25th wedding anniversary.  Happy Anniversary, sweetie!

One of the other things I really enjoy on the pre-dawn rides is the many eyes that I catch in my headlamp as I ride.  They vary from as tiny as the whitish-bluish-greenish reflection of spider eyes on the road or in the grass to the small orange glow of rabbit eyes to the big yellow orbs of cats and the bluish-green hue of deer.  When there are several deer standing in a field it’s really quite striking to see nothing but eyes peering from the darkness.  Sometimes, I've never quite sure what animal is glowing.

This fellow was more absorbed in looking for food in the ditch than by my presence and I easily could have gotten closer for a better shot, but I didn't want to push my luck.  Seeing how close I could get to a skunk before getting sprayed is not on my challenge list for this year.

Not the glow from an animal but a light spilling through a window onto the driveway that I circle around on the morning ride in the neighborhood.

I loved the pink tones of the sky this morning.

I have been putting off taking my bike in for maintenance and finally did so this morning.  I was having more and more slippage when pedaling but I didn't realize just how bad things had gotten; riding everyday, severe deterioration has a way of sneaking up.  The chain was shot, the cassette was shot and two of the front chainrings need to be replaced, particularly the middle one which had severe wear.  I lubed them regularly but it has been 5,000 miles since the last tune up in February.

Today's Ride:  2hrs 7mins.  25.25 miles (yes, that was done on purpose).  77 degrees.  Miles YTD:  5,947.94
