16 September 2011 Ride:

A very busy day today which accounts for this late posting.  And, with dinner on the stove, this will also be a short posting.

Up at 4:10 and on the bike by 5:00.  A bit of rain to start but then the rain held the remainder of the ride.  I had a lot of energy even though it was so early, though that didn't translate to a fast pace.  Riding in the dark tends to slow me down a bit.  And, then there was the broken cable I was still contending with which acts as a governor.  Happy to say all the bath soaking I did last night seemed to really pay off as the bottom as healing well and allowing me to ride.

An unfamiliar small bright light low in the western sky as I traveled down one of the roads in the neighborhood.  It looked as if it could be Venus but that wasn't possible given the cloud cover and the part of the sky as Venus will always be near the sun.  Possibly a plane but too bright and jewel like and the light seemed to remain constant.  There's always hoping it's something extraterrestrial but, alas...

...just a transformer on the fritz which sizzled as I rode by.  It was pretty to eye with every passing.

I didn't see my friend the skunk but I did see his nocturnal romancer, the orange tabby cat who seemed to be waiting for her lover to show up.  Of course, I may have the genders completely wrong.

I also passed a gaze of four raccoons.  I stopped to take their picture and they even obliged me briefly with a good pose.  However, since it was raining earlier, my camera was tucked away and by the time I was able to get it out, no picture of consequence.

I forgot to mention that yesterday I saw a red fox.  Unfortunately, it was dead on the road.  Nearby, was also a dead skunk that was very attractive.  Oddly, it did not smell.  It's tail was completely white as was almost all of its back.  Very pretty.

My philisophical thoughts today veered toward this question:  Are we really better off with cars and planes and all the other conveyances that allow us to get places faster?  I think I have asked this question before several months back, imagining a world where only bikes existed.  The pace of life would certainly be slower.

My pace certainly wasn't slower today (except on the bike) as once I got back home I rushed to get the apple crisp I was making into the oven while I then DROVE to take my bike to be repaired and raced back, stopping at a couple of stores along the way.

Apple Crisp to Be
The apple crisp was for a get together of the basically Wednesday volunteer crew at Community Meals.  A very good time was had by all.

Today's Ride:  2hrs. 8mins.  21.11 miles.  52 degrees.  Miles YTD:  6,452.48
