I was determined to ride without interruption this morning, rain or no rain. A very still, nondescript morning. Plenty of reflective eyes again, mostly deer. But, some of my favorite reflective glows are the tiny greenish jewels of light that emanate from spiders on the road and in the grass just off the road.
I did come across my skunk friend from yesterday; at least I think it was the same one as the markings seemed the same and it was the same location. However, the circumstances were much different. I was rounding a curve at a pretty good clip (in the dark with a headlamp) and just off to my left in the ditch was my friend. He was headed for the road and, fortunately, our paths were off by a few seconds. If I had rounded the corner just a couple of seconds later...well, I hate to imagine the end result. As Keith let me know yesterday, he was probably romancing the cat and he probably was on the way back from another night out with the feline when I saw him this morning.
The sky began to lighten and I glanced around for photo ops but it really was a very solid gray, blank canvas type of morning. No moon light peeking through, no sunrise, though good riding. That was okay as I really wanted to just ride. I got 20 miles in before I had to head back to then head into town.
After Community Meals, I headed for the bike trail for a few more miles and did end up with one picture. I spotted them perched on the log but kept riding as I knew that the terrapins are awfully shy and even at forty feet away they would quickly jump into the water. I parked the bike and slowly walked back. I could tell that they were eyeing me and quickly took one picture, while hoping to get a few more to choose from. Alas, I was lucky to get the one as into the water they went after the first snap.
The past couple of days I have tried wearing only one pair of shorts. However, it seems that the extra miles has aggravated the anterior situation and it will be back to two pairs tomorrow. I need to get some healing done down there as I shove off for a 7 day bike trip to Shreveport, LA on the 24th of this month.
Still riding with a broken front derailleur cable. I did try to repair it yesterday but I seemed to miss a vital step as nothing happened when I pushed the shifter. I've had the process demonstrated a couple of times to me but it was awhile ago. And, the two manuals I have only say to thread the cable in the shifter but doesn't go into any more details than that. Two more days and I'll have a new crankshaft and new cable.
Today's Ride: 2hrs 44mins. 31.02 miles. 72 degrees. Very Light Rain. Miles YTD: 6,407,09
