12 October 2011 Ride: Stop to Smell the Flora

Since I knew this would be a busy day with Community Meals in the morning, errands and then massaging Joe in the late afternoon, Wednesday would be a good day for a "Day of Rest" of sorts.   I immensely enjoy my time cooking for Community Meals.  I do tend to be worn out by the time I'm done as I'm working among two to three large ovens and sometimes a large grill.  It doesn't help that I forget to drink water as I'm busily helping to prepare the meal.  I was ready for a nap by the time I got home today but mileage was calling.

I had hoped to squeeze in 30 miles before I had to head back home and get ready to go over to Joe's.  But my legs felt VERY heavy as I started out and my pace felt very slow.  It was a day when I desperately needed to focus not on the miles I wanted to squeeze in but on the ride and the things around me.  After all the rain we have had, the abundance of wild flowers along the road were calling out to me.

All the blossoms today are very small, just a few millimeters across.

Except the one above which is a black walnut.

Note the tail end of a bee or fruit fly in the upper left of the blossom.

And the pods below were the size of large snap pea pods.

As the ride continued, it seemed as if I would be lucky to get in 20 miles.  But my pace did pick up some and 25 miles seemed in sight.  Unlike yesterday when I was getting rejuvenated later in the ride, today, even though I was enjoying the ride, my breath felt labored and getting home to get some rest was a very attractive prospect.  However, when I hit 25 miles with less than about 20 minutes of time left for riding,  I started eyeing 30 miles.  One motivation is that a mile or two less today doesn't seem like much.  But one less mile each day for the remainder of the year adds up to 80 miles.  Though tired, it felt good to draw energy from I know not where and get in all 30 miles.

And though tired, I looked forward to going over and massaging Joe.  As I mentioned in the past, it means so much to him and gives him some momentary relief from his constant pain so it's very fulfilling for me as well.

Today's Ride:  2hrs 28mins.  30.35 miles.  72°  Miles YTD:  7,166.98

Number of miles per day needed to reach 9,000 miles by the end of the year: 22.91
...to reach 10,000 miles by the end of the year: 35.41
