2 October 2011 Ride: 90 Days to Go

I woke up yesterday morning, peeked out of our hotel window and my heart ached.  In view was one of the streets I would have been riding on if I had brought my bike down and it was completely empty.  Later, when I drove the streets at 11:30 to go pick up a sandwich for Rachel, I was surprised how relatively quiet the streets still were and my heart ached some more.  It was a beautiful morning and, I believe, it would have been some great riding along Lakeshore Drive, which, does indeed, run along a lake.  C'est la vie.  I did sleep longer than if I would have gotten up to ride, Rachel and I had a nice casual breakfast and, later, a long walk together in the grass bank that ran along the perimeter of the airport.  Very quiet airport, by the way, as not a single plane landed or took off during our 40 minute walk.

But I still couldn't help think about that great riding time lost as I rode last night with a starting time of 8:45PM after our 6 hour drive back up from Shreveport.  I felt tired and defeated.  My spirits, however, were extremely uplifted when I saw encouraging comments posted by Colene, Tom and Sheri on yesterday's posting on Facebook.  Thank you so much for that.

I also want to give Elizabeth Miller, with whom we carpooled down to Shreveport, a big A+ for effort for trying to fit my bicycle in her vehicle.  She kept insisting on Saturday that I keep trying different positions and I could see her mind clicking away as she was trying to come up with a creative way to cram the bike in.  Once on the road she was still thinking of ways that I might get a bike once we got down to Shreveport.  I did call a couple of bike shops but that was a no go.  One was understanding and, I could tell by the tone of voice of the other person, the sooner I was off the phone, the better.  After the fact, we thought of checking Craigslist or trying to find some other source for a used bike.  Either the owner would be willing to rent it, or I could buy it and then donate it to someone or some organization.  So, thanks Elizabeth for that positive energy.

The above pictures are from the soccer field while at the game Saturday night.  They seemed apropos given yesterday's night ride.  I also like their somewhat sci-fi quality, especially the second one, two very tall aliens with multiple eyes on the march.

2 October Ride:  61mins.  11.13 miles.  60°  Miles YTD:  6,886.22

Today's number of miles per day needed to reach 9,000 miles by the end of the year:  23.49
(We'll wait on starting to calculate what it takes for 10,000 miles)
