7 October 2011 Ride: Panama - Day 2

Desperately seeking computer time.  An interesting day.

Rachel wanted to go white-water kayaking but there were two problems with that.  One, we aren’t experienced enough for the white water that would be available here and, two, to get to white-water would involve a full day and thus mean I would not get back in time to bike.

I did find a 3 hour kayaking tour that supposedly went through the rain forest so I thought that that would be a good compromise.  The starting point was a 45 minute ride to a lodge in the national park.  Rachel commented that a place wasn’t to be trusted if the signs on their bathroom door were only in English, as was the case in the lodge.  I thought she had a point and she turned out to be correct.

We thought we would be driven upstream to then kayak the river back to the lodge.  No.  Our departure point was the lodge itself situated on a point on the river that resembled a lake more than a river.  Okay.  Think positive.  We will kayak up to where the river narrows and wind our way into the rain forest.  Yes!  That is indeed what began to happen.

But, wait.  What’s this? Only five minutes into the canopy and we are already pulling over?  That’s it?  That’s all the kayaking?  Now we will walk up to the waterfall, our guide informs us, which turned out to be no more than some pretty rapids.

Alas.  Rachel and I made the best of it, exploring the boulder filled river bed and hiking further upstream than our guide had ever gone.  The tables seemed to be reversed as we watched our guide really enjoy himself sliding through the small rapids.

And, on the way back, Rachel and I had to keep slowing down in the kayaks so that he didn’t fall too far behind us.

On the way back to the lodge, a cargo ship makes its way down the canal.  The river we were on, the Chagres River, was enlarged to create enough water to supply the canal to operate.

Back to the hotel to re-gear and then back out to the Causeway for the bike ride.  Rachel actually did a tri-athalon of sorts with biking, running and “swimming” in the river.

Tomorrow should be an interesting day of mountain biking in the rainforest for several hours.

7 October Ride:  1hr 50mins.  19 miles.   Miles YTD:  7,014.39
